What Is Scrip?

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase gift cards for gifts or for everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for our organization.

How does scrip generate revenue for WCA

The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Our organization buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to families like yours for full face value. The discount from two to fifteen percent or more – is our organization’s revenue.

Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything. Organization members produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip.

Dear Weston Christian Academy Parent:

We’re pleased to share some exciting news about a new fundraising program for our school. It’s called “scrip”, and it’s the fundraising program that works while you shop.

Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our scrip program including JC Penney, The Gap, Shell, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster and many, many others.

You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple -- scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount. Member families like ours buy the certificates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and our school keeps the difference as revenue. And scrip is exciting, because everybody wins.

The beauty of scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for our school without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with scrip at the stores that participate in the scrip program! And scrip can be used for just gifts and just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out.

The money raised form this program benefits the school and our children directly. Last year WCA raised over $1000 in it’s introductory attempt with SCRIP. It is a beneficial resource that meets our shopping needs for any occasion. Browse the attached order form and get started raising money for WCA.
We will place orders as they are received but prefer bi-monthly orders if possible. Start planning ahead for special occasions. Orders may be left in the school office. For now, collection of orders will be weekly on Wednesdays.
